About CCBSC Reading Level

It is hard for Chinese books to have a precise quantitative grading system. Firstly, Chinese characters evolved from ideographs thousands of years ago. Secondly, One Chinese character can have multiple sounds and meanings. Thirdly, the meaning of characters and sentences can not be translated accurately. Based on these features, it is hard for Chinese books to set a reading level as Phonogram does. (such as LEXILE and RENAISSANCE from the USA and the UK that are based on the difficulty of words, sentence semantics and syntactic.)

CCBSC Reading Level is a grading system based on analysis of massive data accumulated, including the books which interest children from 2 to 15 within their reading ability (Young children are assisted by their parents) and books classified by grades according to teachers’ analysis of children’s different reading abilities. CCBSC Reading Level is divided into 140 levels from CRL2.0 ~ CRL16.0 (CRL4.5 means suitable for children aged 4.5 years, CRL16.0 means suitable for adults)

For example, 4.6 represents the equivalent reading level of the 6th month in grade 4 of primary school. Accelerated Reader is also called GEL and Atos. It is a relatively precise measurement depend on the BL index which is calculated by the computer of the full text.

A-Z(Guided Reading Level)

Chinese Children's Book Selection Committee

To set CCBSC Reading Level which is meant to improve the efficiency of reading for children, enhance the international influence of Chinese publications and encourage original masterpieces. we have established the Chinese Children's Book Selection Committee (short for CCBSC) with the joint effort of numerous schools and non-profit educational institutions. CCBSC insists on the principle of non-governmental, voluntary and non-profitable. We accept volunteer services and all funds are from charitable donations. Through the biennial readers' recommendation and selection of good books, we are committed to achieving the goal of "inspiring children to enjoy reading and encouraging more authors to create children's books".

About Wesleyland Award

Children's picture books (picture books) are not only literary (scientific), but also have a high level of artistic appeal, as well as educational value. Picture books for children are a perfect combination of literature and art. Only in an environment where children's literature, children's education and the art of illustration flourish at a high level can world-class classic picture books be produced.

The three most influential awards for children’s picture books in the world are the Hans Christian Andersen Award (Denmark), the Caldecott Medal (the United States) and the Kate Greenaway Medal (the UK). Also, there are several well-known awards such as the Deutscher Bilderbuchpreis (sponsored by the German Association for Juvenile Literature)and the Bologna Ragazzi Award (selected by 9 Italian children aged from 6 to 9). All the foreign awards above were largely born half a century ago.

In recent decades, children's literature, education and the art of illustration in China have achieved unprecedented development. Although China currently has several awards in the category of children's literature, there are no major children's and juveniles’ book awards with a certain degree of international influence.

With the support of experts from the Asian Education Association, we start to prepare the competition for the award of Most Favorite Chinese Picture Book Among Children, we are committed to achieving the goal of "inspiring children to enjoy reading and encouraging more authors to create children's books".

To have a place in the world cultural competition, a differentiated strategy that can highlight the characteristics is needed. Accordingly, we have proposed a selection scheme that takes into account children’s interests and teachers’ recommendation and includes the way of partition sampling and age-divided voting. It will achieving the goal of "inspiring children to enjoy reading and encouraging more authors to create children's books".

Representatives of the sponsoring units voted to name the award as "Wesleyland Award".
